I am going to keep this one short and sweet (at least intend to anyway.)  Local small business owners, I want to give you a quick and easy tip, and the best part is, this is something YOU can do and you can do for FREE in order to promote your business.

Submit your Business to Local Directories.

Let me try and relate.  Do you remember the Yellow Pages?  Yea, those big white and yellow books that mysteriously show up in your mailbox every year.  Well, your business is listed in there under the yellow pages, right?  Maybe you don’t have a big ad in there, but merely just a name, address and phone number.

Well, PEOPLE DON’T USE THOSE ANYMORE. Ok, fine, maybe that is a bit dramatic.  It’s the same as taking 2 minutes to write a check at wal-mart, when you can just swipe your card in 13 seconds.

The NEW Yellow Pages

My point is…. there are now over 100 different versions of the yellow pages ONLINE that people use every day in order to find a business. Need a plumber?  People look on SuperPages. Need a new car? Do a Google search for “car dealerships” and they show up on a map in your area.

Now let’s give you a real life example.  Do a Google search for “Myrtle Beach roofers”. Look what websites show up (besides the map results at the top.)
#1 SuperPages.com
#2 YellowPages.com
#3 ElocalRoofers.com

Then there are local websites, like this Myrtle Beach roofers website,  and then some MORE directories. AngiesList, DexKnows, Manta, Yelp. The list goes on and one. And guess what, THEY ARE ALL FREE, you just have to take the time to get your business listed on them.

“How do I know which to submit to?”

Hint: I just told you.   Basically, 1) do a search for your type of business crossed with your city. For example:  “Las Vegas floor installation”, “St. Louis painters”, “Conway Roofing Company”.  2) Then see what directory type websites come up! 3) Submit to them by finding the “Submit your site” or “Add your business”.

Being listed on these directories will not only help you get your name out there, but will also help brand your company, as well as help a little bit with search engine authority.

Of course, if you need any help submitting or maybe confused about that to write or how to describe your company, then give me a shout! I’d be glad to help you along the way.

P.S. The search engine’s have directories too!   The map results that show up when you do a search have to come from SOMEWHERE?  Well guess what, the business owners have submitted their info to Google, Yahoo, Bing and others as well!
